Ghost-net Satellite-Trackers North Pacific
Project is inactive
This project uses satellite-tracking technologies to locate and recover some of the largest and most destructive of all plastic pollution—enormous “ghost nets,” derelict fishing gear, that drifts below the ocean’s surface, entangling ships and entrapping wildlife.
In addition to their removal of ghost nets, they have removed tons of consumer debris – both that has been caught by the ghost nets and scooped up by their ships.
During the kick-off year of a ghost net clean-up in 2018, 18 satellite trackers were deployed by various vessels of opportunity in the Pacific.
With the help of citizen scientists and other ships of opportunity, Ocean Voyages Institute will continue to tag large, floating plastic debris in the North Pacific Gyre with satellite tracking buoys.
If you are planning to sail in the or around the North Pacific Gyre you may be able to carry and deploy a tracker for them.

We've twice carried trackers in the North Pacific for Mary's team - it's a fantastic initiative making waves on to tackle ocean plastic pollution - get in touch to see how you can join in!
